Mary D. Marino, LMSW, M.Ed

bioHello! I am a licensed social worker and independent contractor for Choices Counseling and Consulting. I practice from a place of two core beliefs.

First and foremost, I believe in the connectedness of all people through the universal human experience of basic emotions and drives. I will empathize strongly with you because I understand that beneath the individual circumstances we’ll discuss in our sessions is fear, anger, happiness, sadness, love, pain, and/or more–all emotions and drives I have experienced as a fellow person and reflected upon in my personal and professional work.

Secondly, I believe the power for positive change exists within all people. I will support you in accessing your inner strength to effect the change you desire. To this end, I use a client-centered, strengths-based approach in my practice. You will determine the content and pace of each session; I will guide you, and at the same time respect the organic process of therapy, wherein you and I create meaning together.

As your clinician, I will help you to understand the connections between how you feel, think, and behave, as well as the stories about yourself you have believed to be true. I will support you in exploring existential questions of identity, such as “Who am I?” and “What is my place in the world?” Yet, I will also assist you with concrete tasks such as assertiveness training through role play, should you desire that. In addition, I incorporate mindful meditation with clients who experience anxiety and are interested in practicing this coping strategy in session. I am happy to guide you in loving kindness, cue-word relaxation, body scan, visualization, and basic breathing meditations to support you in finding stillness in your mind and body.
